BASI Instructor Level Information

BASI – The British Association of Snowsport Instructors is the governing body responsible for the training and grading of British Ski Instructors.

There are four BASI grades:

Level 1 – This qualifies you to work on artificial slopes and indoor slopes in the UK.

Level 2 – This qualification allows ski instructors to work in the mountains part time or seasonally anywhere in the world (apart from France) , working within a snowsport school. To work for a snowsport school in France you must firstly pass the French Test Technique.

Level 3 (also known as ISIA: International Ski Instructors Association) – This qualification allows instructors to work in the mountains part time or seasonally anywhere in the world (apart from France) , working within a snowsport school. With the ISIA qualification you are able to teach more advanced skiers and be paid a higher rate than a Level 2 Ski Instructor. To work for a snowsport school in France you must firstly pass the French Test Technique.

Level 4 (also known as ISTD: International Ski Teaching Diploma) – This qualification is for international instructors working in snowsports as a career within snowsports schools or as an independent. You are able to work for a snowsport school in France without firstly passing the French Test Technique if you have passed this level.

Employment oppportunities

Once you have succeeded at Level 2 you can find employment in Europe and Worldwide (in France only once you have passed the Test Technique). The BASI qualification is recognised all over the world and there are some interesting places to visit – try Japan, New Zealand, America, Australia, Europe, Argentina, the world is your oyster.

To work in France with the Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications you must successfully complete the French Test Technique which is a slalom time trial exam. If you pass the French Test Technique you are then granted stagiere status which allows you to work in a French ski school.  France is traditionally the highest paid of all the countries as the process to become fully qualified here is lengthy.

When you complete Level 4 you can teach in France without having to pass the Test Technique.
