Sports Massage
Sports massage is a form of bodywork geared towards people who undertake
regular activity. It prepares the body for activity, aids recovery
after exercise, helps prevent injuries and enhances performance. It
also treats soft tissue injuries.
You don't have to be involved in sport to benefit from a sports massage.
The techniques can be applied to anyone in need of remedial therapy.
Massage works on the soft tissues and associated problems however
caused - occupational, recreational, medical conditions, postural,
general wear and tear.
The Physical benefits of Sports massage are:
- Relaxes the whole body
- Loosens tight muscles
- Increases range of motion and flexibility
- Relieves tired and aching muscles
- Helps relieve pain
- Reduces tension
- Assists in your recovery from illness or injury
- Enhances the immune system
- Reduces tension
- Helps correct imbalances caused by muscle tension
Swedish massage
In Sweden, "Swedish massage" is simply known as "classic massage". And that is exactly what it is - a classic treatment which represents the western standard for massage. Swedish massage has been portrayed on TV in the past as a very hard massage performed by some sadistic therapist in a medical-style uniform, but this is just TV...
The five main techniques used in Swedish massage - stroking and gliding; kneading; rubbing; tapping or "pounding"; vibration - are probably what spring to mind when you think about a "typical" massage. They're designed to improve your circulation, soothe your muscles and make you more relaxed
Swedish massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This sensitivity to pressure makes it ideal for relaxation.
Besides the calming benefits, Swedish massage is thought to be good for:
- easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins
- improving circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood
- helping to keep ligaments and tendons supple
- stimulating the nervous system
- reducing emotional and physical stress
Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.
Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable.
Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.
Remedial Massage
Remedial massage holistically treats the whole body, and traces the pain or discomfort as far back as possible to the original cause, healing the cause of the problem as well as the symptoms.
Remedial massage is very effective in dealing with muscular problems, loss of muscle tone and adhesions and removing physical tension in the muscles. Advanced massage techniques are used to breakdown fibrous areas which may have formed within the muscle, promote circulation and increase the blood supply to the injured muscle, so alleviating pain and discomfort, promoting the bodies' ability to heal itself.
Remedial massage is excellent therapy for soothing for the nervous system and can help bring the individual to a sense of awareness to their own bodies needs. It can be a vital aid to combat stress in our everyday lives, rejuvenating and soothing our system.
Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage helps to refresh and relax muscles, increasing the blood flow and therefore the oxygen flow around your body. This gets rid of toxins in very sore and strained muscles, which helps them to strengthen and heal.
Deep tissue massage is often used to treat people who are recovering from accidents, and for sports injuries as it increases blood circulation in muscles that are underused, relieves chronic muscle tension throughout the body, and can also break down scar tissue and "knots" deep in the muscles. Deep tissue massage is a particularly effective massage for people with muscular pain.
Deep tissue massage does what it says "on the tin" - it is a massage technique that works on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Similar to Swedish massage, deep tissue massage uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments - deep finger pressure that concentrates on particular areas, and follows or goes across the fibres of muscles and tendons.
Generally speaking, deep tissue massage is recommended for specific problems, so you may know what to expect already. If you have decided to have this massage treatment yourself, you need to make sure that you give the therapist as much information as you can. The therapist will talk to you about any special problems you have, how an injury or muscle strain has improved or got worse, your lifestyle, exercise routine, diet and so on, so they know how best to help you.
You may feel a bit sore, or tired after a deep tissue massage though, so give yourself plenty of time to get there and get settled, and to have a lie-down or a shower afterwards. Any discomfort should go away within a few hours. It is really important to drink plenty of water to continue to flush out the toxins in the muscles.
